The Humanitarian with the Guillotine
[Excerpted from The God of the Machine, 1943.]

Most of the harm in the world is done by good people, and not by accident, lapse, or omission. It is the result of their deliberate actions, long persevered in, which they hold to be motivated by high ideals toward virtuous ends.

This is a must-read. Great stuff here.

Also, what do you get when you put pirates in the sky? Skyrates!. This has been occupying my spare time in-between tasks at work. It's a cute flash-based quasi-MMO with a surprisingly fun combat system.

It's a good point. Most folks think they are doing something for a good reason of some kind. Folks who assume all political villians are moustache twirling evil scheemers havn't met too many actual villians.

Better think twice about any suggestion to do some evil for a "greater good".

That's the high-level idea.

The rest of the excerpt talks about some specific problems with humanitarianism for its own sake. It's a damn good read if you haven't yet gone through it.
