12:17p - New stuff
So, I'm in training (again) today and tomorrow. I figure it's time for a long-overdue post about random recent stuff in my life.
My movie collection is now in dire need of additional shelves. The stacks and stacks of DVDs demand better organization. Over the weekend I picked up the 16 DVD set of Monty Python's Flying Circus, Pulp Fiction, Unleashed, Land of the Dead, and The Devil's Rejects.
Also, over the weekend we saw King Kong and Brokeback Mountain. Kong was amazing, exceptional, and LOUD. Everything in the movie is big and loud. The CG is everywhere, and it's phenominal. I really liked Jack Black's acting throughout the movie.
Brokeback Mountain is actually one of the best romance movies I've ever seen. Now, I'm not exactly an authority on this genre, but being that I am married, I've seen a fair number. The pacing isn't slow, it's very deliberate. This movie progresses from scene to scene with great care and intent. The acting is top notch; much more is said in between the dialogue. I was really impressed with how the movie chose to downplay the graphic sex in favor of focusing on the war of emotions being waged. Hell, I think Jarhead was a much more homoerotic movie than Brokeback Mountain was.
Though, where Jarhead is all about coitus interruptus within the unrepentant cock-fest that is the American military, Brokeback Mountain is about the consequences of secret relationships and hidden intimacy.
In the kitchen, we've added a bread maker to our list of contraptions. This thing is awesome. It's got settings for nearly any type of bread, including french, italian, and artisan breads. I'm hoping this helps us make more efficient use of the time we spend in the kitchen. The first hurdle to overcome is simply realizing that we need to start the damned thing in the morning so that we have fresh bready bits in the evening.
We also picked up a book on authentic German cooking. I'm not sure we'll be touching the recipes with pig's hooves or calf's brains anytime soon. Even the oxtail soup is probably a bit much. Though, many of the rest of the recipes look rather tasty and will need to be experimented with.
I've finally gotten a chance to play the Winter Assault expansion to WH40k: Dawn of War. This is probably THE best RTS I've played. Rise of Nations is a close second. I need to check out Rise of Legends. It's been getting good reviews.
I'm working my way through Fable a second time now. This game is fan-fucking-tastic. If only it was as large in scope as Morrowind was. Although, Elder Scrolls IV is due out in the next few months. I'm hoping that is just as good as it's predecessor.
I've been poking at Black & White 2 a little bit. I wasn't very fond of the first game, and this one hasn't really given me anything more to sink my teeth into. In some ways it's even a step back because it's exceptionally more difficult to be completely good. Though, perhaps that's the whole idea; you can't rule the world without the necessity of some amount of evil.
Civ IV, while really good, isn't seeing much play. I think, on the whole, I've moved on from the Civ games. There's a certain inherent limitation to being confined to the specific waypoints in world history that Sid Meier has chosen for the game. I'm hoping that if I wait a little while, player created mods will start expanding what this game can do.
As soon as D&D Online ( www.ddo.com ) ships, I fully expect that to be the only game I play for quite a while. Everything I've seen coming out of the beta tests indicates that this isn't the same ol' MMO.
