11:50p - Moooooovies
So, due to a few people bailing at the last minute, instead of boardgames turtle_avenger and I went and saw The Descent instead.
I went mostly to see the trailer for Saw III, but most of the critics rated the movie decently too.
This was one of the better suspense/thriller/horror movies I've seen in quite a while. Hostel was pretty good, and somewhat creative. The Descent was definitely better. The plot quickly launched us straight into the action, without a lot of time spent on more than a bare essential amount of character development. From there, things go from bad to worse to much much worse very quickly.
Some things I liked:
The all-female lead roles, who were all strong women characters. None of the idiot bubble-head who's only around because she's fucking the lead male character(s).
The keen balance of gotchas, gore, suspense, action, and adventure. This wasn't a movie that leaned too far in any single direction. It had elements of action and some adventure. It had some gore, and several gotchas, but neither were too repetitive or unnecessary. Each element was used to keep tension high, but not overused so much that the film falls into being trite, cliche, or slapstick.
The small amount of inter-character conflict is dealt with rather subtly and elegantly, and isn't something that's clubbed upside the audiences head. However, in the end, its outcome is completely satisfying.
I suppose the only (minor) gripe I have with the movie is the very very end scene is obvious and a bit well-worn. The last 3-4 minutes of the movie had me going, "Ok, so which cliche ending are they going to use?"
However, it's not really enough to totally ruin the movie (unlike the assholes behind us that were talking through the movie).
It's definitely worth seeing in the theater. Good horror movies are rare, so definitely take advantage of them.
