10:04a - Revisiting...
I'm giving Year Zero another listen.
I listened to it a few times right after it came out, and wasn't really impressed. It's certainly not as aggressive as Broken or The Downward Spiral. It seems like more an evolution of The Fragile's style of heavily-processed-yet-still-very-accessible music.
I'm not sure if this is influenced by dealing with a major label or not, or if it's simply a product of being an experienced professional musician and no longer an angry kid railing on the system.
At this point, I think I like it for what it is, and am trying to not criticize it for what I want it to be. I'd love to see another Broken/TDS style album, but I don't think he's really that person anymore. I think it's similar to the change in direction that Tool has taken on their recent albums. They're not quite the same people that put out Undertow or Aenima.
In general, I like seeing musicians evolve and develop their music. Sevendust has come a long, long way from their first attempts at being yet another Nu Metal band and have turned into one of the best Prog Metal bands around.
I think in this case, Year Zero is a fine album from a competent artist. I'm happy to listen to it as a part of the general NIN discography. However, I do get the feeling that it's missing a critical part of what made the earlier albums, and even up to The Fragile, such compelling music. It almost seems like there was more focus on the technical aspects of producing the music and less focus on the intense emotional input that makes his music great.
